About Our Name

In the early 1980s Mortimer Adler, then CEO of the Encyclopedia Britannica, founded the Paideia (puh-day-uh) Group. The group produced three books, the first of which was called The Paideia Proposal; An Educational Manifesto.  A major focus of the Paideia Proposal was the integration of the educational experience; the deliberate focus on coherence and connectedness throughout the curriculum.  This was accomplished via intellectual coaching and seminar discussion in addition to more common lectures and presentations.

Adler founded the National Paideia Center at the University of North Carolina to implement the Manifesto into school systems throughout the country.  The Center focuses on active learning with the intention, “...to teach all students to think” through the use of “...three types of instruction to enhance the literacy, problem solving, and thinking skills of all students.”  Click here to go to the  Paideia Center website.

The Paideia Group and the Paideia Center are focused on the education of children.  We adopted the name PaideiaPro because we believe that the Paideia Group had the right idea for how to make education challenging, interesting, and relevant.  And while we have no connection with the Paideia Center, we apply the Paideia instructional techniques to executive and professional education.  Our emphasis is on integration and connectedness achieved by seminar discussion and coaching.

{The “pedia” in encyclopedia is derived from “paideia”}
